It’s that time of year when the seedlings are getting ready to head out into the big, big world. You’ve planted them and spaced them just so, you’ve watered them, given them ample light, and nurtured them… and it’s finally time to plant!
I wanted to share a few pictures and video of two sets of seedlings to compare. Both are the same lettuce variety, sown on the same date, in the same compost, light conditions, and watering. Can you see the difference? I sure can!
The plants on the left were started in the original container that they stayed in until coming out to the garden, the plants on the right however, got a bump to a bigger home. You can see in the pictures not only are the sizes of the plants themselves vastly different, but their root systems too! And that’s really what you want and need are strong healthy roots for your little seedlings.
It’s easy! Simply find a bigger container or cell, fill with compost, use a tool or your finger to make a hole, and gently…gently… move your little seedling into its new space.
See my new post coming soon about pricking out your seedlings for more information. I promise, your plants will be much happier and will thrive in the garden when they go out. Good luck!
